It was not without reason that 1957 ended in 7. That year was a turning point into
good for the Historical Museum of Alytus. It moved into new premises at the basement of the
Arts and Leisure Center (S.Darius ir S.Girenas str. 10) . Henrikas Lizdenis, a young and energetic teacher, arrived to
become Director of the Museum and brought his own collection of items. Soon a new permanent exposition
opened, and a number of exploration-collection expeditions organized to neighboring
districts.

Henrikas Lizdenis associated with other managers of museums,
archaeologists and ethnologists. He helped to collect sample material for the
Dzukai farmstead that was being created at the Rumsiskes Museum under the Open Air,
he took part in archaeological expeditions together with the Institute of History at the
Academy of Science of the LSSR, the Trakai Historical Museum. He organized
archaeological expeditions himself as well. |

The Historical Museum of Alytus was expanding. In Ryliskiai (25 km away from Alytus) there was
established the memorial room of R.Mizara, a writer, activist of the US Lithuanian community, while
in Subartonys (about 30 km away from Alytus) the cottage-museum of the classic of Lithuanian
literature V.Kreve-Mickevitius was arranged.

Without mockery, we may call H.Lizdenis an ideological leader of Alytus ethnographers.
He published a great number of articles in the press, he gave help to small school museums,
and promoted expeditions of young ethnographers. Lizdenis took an active part in establishing
the LSSR Ethnographic Society, and organized the affiliate of this society in the Alytus District.

The director of the museum was concerned about archaeological, historical monuments and
objects of nature that were in the environs of Alytus: he consulted with the collective farms as to
their preservation, registered them, made up schemes and natural objects.
