In 1988 the construction work was undertaken by the director of
the museum Vidmantas Laurinavitius. Brilliant organizer and good manager, he succeeded in
re-constructing the museum anew by evading the changing political situation of Lithuania as well as
the economic blockade. The work was done quickly by making use of all possible planning
possibilities. The small and friendly staff (2 scientific workers, an artist, a keeper, a restorer)
arranged new permanent expositions.

In 1990 two affiliates were handed over to Alytus Historical Museum. They were memorial
museums of Lithuanian poets A.Matutis and A.Jonynas, located in the same town.
