Contemporary Lithuanian Art

Robertas Antinis. Friendship. 1970

The exhibition gives an overview of contemporary (1945 onwards) painting, graphic art, sculpture by celebrated Lithuanian artists and reveals characteristic traits of Lithuanian art. The period of Detente (1956-62) was a chance to get acquainted with phenomena of Western art. After the exhibition of 12th-20th c. French art from the gatherings of the museums of the Soviet Union, held in Moscow in 1956, an interest to the Impressionist art has arisen. Artistic principles of Impressionism influenced works by A.Petrulis, M.Cvirkienė, A.Gudaitis, V.Povilaitis. An event of extreme importance was the 6th World Youth and Students Festival which took place in 1957 in Moscow.

Laima Drazdauskaitė. Landscape with Junipers. 1977
Students of the Vilnius Art Academy who participated in the event got acquainted with Italian Neo-Realism, American, Swedish, Finnish, Islandic, Swiss Abstract art. Italian Neo-Realism made an impact on V.Gečas' painting, A.Švėgžda based his art on the principles of photo realism, J.Švažas, A.Stasiulevičius, L.Katinas gradually turned to the abstract image. The abstract expression is especially characteristic to the later generation of artists L.Drazdauskaitė, P.R.Vaitekūnas.

In the painting of Lithuanian artists of 7-8 decades tendencies of modern Western art got free interpretation, very often combined with expressionist achievements of the 'Ars' group of early 20th c. The creative heritage of the 'Ars' group was the most accessible example of modern painting. Members of this group who did not emigrate (J.Mikėnas, A.Gudaitis) took an active part in the art life of Lithuania. Expressive brush strokes, bright contrasting colors, emphasized decorativeness were characteristic to the most artists of the younger generation of 7-8 decades: L.Surgailis, L.Tuleikis, V.Karatajus, J.Švažas, A.Stasiulevičius, V.Kisarauskas.

The exhibition also contains works by the sculptors L.Strioga, R.Antinis, J.Mozūraitė-Klemkienė, J.Kėdainis. Realistic treatment is replaced by architectonic forms, literary narration disappeared and turned into specific plastic. Works by Kaunas artists of the last decade (so called 'Generation of the Brake') are also represented.

Jurgis Mačiūnas FLUXUS Cabinet

J. and J. Janavičius. Event, devoted to J.Mačiūnas, 2000
The idea to organize the Cabinet devoted to Jurgis (George) Mačiūnas (1931-1978), a world famous art reformer, initiator of the avant-garde Fluxus movement was not accidental as the house where he was born is next to the Gallery.

The Cabinet contains works of art by J.Mačiūnas, J.Beuys, Mieko (Chieko) Shiomi and other representatives of the movement: unconventional books, samples of postal art. The works of Lithuanian authors (J.Mekas, J. and J. Janavičius, R.Diržius, K.Grigaliūnas) devoted to the Fluxus movement are included here also. Information material, catalogues, magazines, videos constantly complement the exhibition. The Jurgis Mačiūnas Cabinet is a start to the Fluxus museum in Kaunas.
