The museum was founded in 1963 in the house that belonged to Čiurlionis' parents. M.K.Čiurlionis (1875-1911), the eminent Lithuanian artist and composer lived here in his young days and used to spend his holidays when a mature artist. Forests and lakes, Mergelių Akys (Girls' Eyes), Švendubrė, Raigardas, Meilės sala (Island of Love) were the source of his creative ideas. The commemorative part of the museum is situated in two wooden houses located in nearly authentic surroundings. One of the buildings houses objects that belonged to the Čiurlionis family: a harmonium, a piano that served M.K.Čiurlionis, other items. The museum is a place for piano and string concerts. The exhibition includes original works by M.K.Čiurlionis: 'Christ', 1905; 'Christ at the Mount of Olives', 1909; fluor-etching 'The Offering'. Other buildings of the museum house exhibitions that highlight the artist's work, his activities and family history. Lectures, concerts and film shows are held here. |
