Madonna with a Pear
Late 15th-early 16th c.
|
|
The exhibition presents a survey of the old Lithuanian art. Alongside easel painting the exhibition contains two wooden sculptures of exceptional
beauty, the finest specimens of Lithuanian religious art - 'Madona from Veliuona'
(second half of the 15th c.) and 'Madonna with a Pear'. Gothic sculpture may have appeared in Lithuania after the official baptism of the country in 1387, usually produced by
Polish, German, Czech and Prussian masters. Later sculptures were carved by local
masters.
Easel painting constitutes the larger part of the exhibition. In the 17th-early 18th
c. a representative portrait spread in Lithuanian-Polish State (portraits of the noble
aristocrats, local gentry, clergymen painted by unknown artists). Not only local masters but artists invited from foreign countries took part in the artistic life of the
country.
