European Fine Arts. 16th-20th c.

P. Weimar. Conversation. 1888

Twelve halls of the M.Þilinskas Art Gallery present a wide panorama of artistic styles, epochs, authors and schools starting with the late Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism to Romanticism, Symbolism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau and late 20th c. tendencies in art. Here are the countries that inspired development of art (Italy, France, Holland, Spain, Germany) as well as the countries that adopted world tendencies and formed their national schools (Austria, Russia, Eastern European countries and the Baltic states).
Beside less known authors the exhibition contains works by the world-famous artists: the follower of Caravaggio F.Rustici's 'The Concert', 17th c. Spanish realist J. de Ribera's 'Diogenes with a Lantern', 'The Crucifix' by the great exponent of the Flemish Baroque P.P. Rubens. This is the only work by this master in the Baltic states.
A.Rodin. Eternal Spring. After 1902

B.Thorvaldsen.  Achilles and Briseis

There are also landscapes by the Swiss symbolist A.Boecklin, 'Woman with a Mask' by the leader of the 'Sezession' movement L. Corinth, 'Portrait of a Girl' by the French realist G.Courbet, sculptures by A.Rodin and B.Thorvaldsen on display. The museum boasts of large collections of 17th-18th c. Italian and Dutch paintings.
The exhibition includes rich gatherings of 19th c. art and of the 1st half of the 20th c. Belgian art which was acquired by gift in 1936 at the exhibition held in Kaunas.
The collection constantly expands supplemented by specimens of contemporary art acquired at temporary exhibitions held in the museum.
