Aquarium

European wels

In the eighteen exhibition tanks with capacities ranging from 1 to 6 m3 visitors can see 40 fish species from Lithuania's rivers, lakes and the Baltic Sea.

Although our cold waters are not notable for a great diversity of fishes, even experienced fishermen sometimes confuse fish species which look rather alike. In the aquariums you will see a 20 kilo European wels, large chubs, barbels, European graylings, eels, chekhons, Baltic whitefish, black sculpins, burbots, cod and many other fishes.

Piranhas

Seven aquariums have become the home for quite a few agile and colourful tropic freshwater fishes, the best-known of which are the piranhas and the majestic discuses. The huge green moray, which has lived in the aquarium for 15 years, and the coral reef fishes of unsurpassed beauty, receive the most of visitors' attention. A numerous school of 5-7 kg trouts are splashing in the central pool containing 750 m3 of Baltic Sea water. Four aquariums are allotted to invertebrates of coral reefs: corals, the builders of coral reefs, sea anemones, crustaceans, starfish, sea urchins and various molluscs. A 7-m3 aquarium 3.5 m in length is under construction for brightly lit corals of diverse forms and colours, tridacna clams, sea anemones and bright-coloured fishes of the coral reefs. Keeping these creatures alive requires a lot of attention and knowledge.
