Visitors are mostly excited about penguins, the flightless birds which live in a
penguinarium designed specially for them. It is a 60 m2 room with two small
pools and a 240 m3 pool outside. The temperature in the penguinarium is always
around +10°C, and the penguins stay there when it is too hot outside (in
summer) or too cold (during the winter frost). At present four penguin species
are kept at the Lithuanian Sea Museum: gentoo (Pygoscelis papua), chinstrap (Pygoscelis
antarctica), Magellanic (Spheniscus magellanicus) and jackass (Spheniscus
demersus) penguins, as well as hybrids of jackass and Magellanic penguins which
have been hatched in the Museum. Each penguins eats up a kilo of Baltic herring
a day. Vitamins and trace elements are added to the food given to all these
animals.
