The Peninsula Castle

The building of the castle is reputed to has been started by Duke Kęstutis in 1377 and was finished during the reign of Vytautas Grand Duke, in 1414-1430. The castle was guarded with the help of 11 defence towers. After 1430, the castle was the residence of the Great dukes of Lithuania – Žygimantas Kęstutaitis and Švitrigaila. In the year of 1655, the castle was destroyed and not rebuilt.
