In this part of the town the Karaites have been living since the times of the Grand Duke Vytautas (14th c.) . It is believed that the Grand Duke Vytautas brought the Karaites to Trakai after his marches to Crimea. They served as guards of the castle and also bodyguards of Vytautas. Civilians cultivated land, were good craftsmen and traders. Karaimu street attracts tourists by its distinctive architecture: which includes a back wall with a primary feature three windows facing the street due to the lack of space. |
