The first regional Lithuanian Museum of Art. It was established in the premises of the existed
ducks Oginskiai estate in Plunge. The palace was constructed by the German
architect K. Lorencas project, which was built by duck Mykolas Oginskis. He was not only a rich man, but he was a famous enlightener
and a man of culture, who has established a school of music in Plungę
- in that school his way to music and art's world began the composer and artist M. K.Ciurlionis. In the ducks Oginskiai period all were met
and seen off by music which was heard in the park of remarkable beauty surrounding the palace.
The idea of establishing of the art's museum of Samogitia born in same
Plunge. The Ministry of Culture of Lithuania approved this idea and the large works began. The first exhibition was held on by artist
Juozas Bagdonas who lived in the U. S.A., than were exhibited creative works of Samogitian artist Adomas Galdikas, and in summer
of 1994 on the first day of the Second World Samogitian Art Exhibition the
Samogitian Art Museum officially was opened. Its aim - to collect and exhibit the creative works of Samogitians, who have spread all over
the world, to refresh the musical life tradition which has been in the Oginskiai estate and park, to hold on the exhibitions of the famous Samogitian artists, to acquaint widely visitors with the Samogitian art's
history, to arrange the historical exposition of Plunge district.
The Samogitian Art Museum is known now by artists and art's lovers. The
Plunge palace ensemble is managed today so, that in future it will be the important center of culture it will be the important center of culture
and tourism of Samogitia. |
